Barkerville to host annual Williams Creek Sports Day and Goldfield Bakery Pie Eating Contest for children of all ages
One hundred and fifty years ago life in Barkerville was difficult, but the people who worked so long and hard to get here and stay here found plenty of ways to have fun, all the same. Next Saturday, July 20th, Barkerville Historic Town will pay homage to those enterprising thrill-seekers by hosting its annual Williams Creek Sports Day and Goldfield Bakery Pie Eating Contest. Throughout the day British Columbia’s largest historic site will offer attendees more than a dozen different types of family activities and games, including a broad jump, funny face contest, greasy pole climb, and Ladies’ Egg and Spoon Race. The Goldfield Bakery, established in Barkerville in the 1930s, will also host the 9th annual Pie Eating Contest, and people come from all over the province to compete for the coveted title of “fastest handless pie eating champion.”
“You haven’t seen gastronomic joy until you’ve seen two dozen kids covered in pie filling,” said James Douglas, Barkerville’s Manager of Visitor Experiences. “The Goldfield Bakery Pie Eating Contest is a beloved Barkerville tradition, and we’re confident that this year’s winner will be the fastest ever.”
As a special treat this year, Williams Creek Sports Day festivities will round out the weekend when Barkerville’s own Richard Wright, producer of the acclaimed Theatre Royal, will be host a reading and signing of his latest book, Barkerville and the Cariboo Goldfields at the historic Wake Up Jake Restaurant and Coffee Saloon on Sunday, July 21st. A prolific author of more than twenty books, Wright will be giving a multimedia presentation on Barkerville, as well as reading from his book, from 5:30pm onward.
“Richard Wright, recipient of the 2012 Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association’s President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement, literally wrote the book on Barkerville,” said Douglas. “It is a real treat to have him presenting his latest work over the Sports Day weekend, and we encourage anyone with a passion for Barkerville to join us on Sunday at the Wake Up Jake.”
