Available Positions: Two (2)

Employment Period (A): May 8-Sept. 27, 2015

Employment Period (B): May 8-August 28, 2015

Job Location: Barkerville Historic Town, Barkerville, British Columbia, Canada

Staring Salary: $17.68/hour plus benefits; depending on experience

Workload: 7 hours/day x 5 days/week

Job Description: Acting either as an early-20th century Chinese merchant, Chinese school teacher or contemporary European resident (for Caucasian Canadian actors), interpreters will introduce site visitors and students to the history of Barkerville’s Chinatown between the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, including:

  • conducting walking tours of Chinatown
  • teaching Chinese language and culture in the Chinese School
  • introducing and demonstrating Chinese arts, music, sports, games, and so on in Chinatown
  • patrolling Chinatown and answering tourists and students questions
  • maintaining Chinatown’s garden and chicken pen, and
  • preparing and conducting the Chinese Mid-autumn festival, taking place on August 15

Job Requirements: Must have either Canadian citizenship, Permanent Resident Card or off-campus Work Permit, and

  • be 18 years of age or older
  • demonstrate proficiency in spoken English and Chinese (if casting Chinese roles)
  • possess a BA degree or be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in social sciences or theatre
  • have knowledge of the history and culture of China and the history of British Columbia
  • an ability to interact well with site visitors and students of multi-cultural backgrounds
  • an ability to work professionally with other team members and colleagues in other programs

Bonus Expectations:

  • experience of working in a museum setting
  • experience of working in a tourism setting
  • knowledge or practice of either Chinese arts, crafts, performing arts, sports, or herb medicine
  • a valid driver’s license
